Dog & Cat Grooming FAQs

Here are the most frequently asked questions we've received from clients about pet grooming at Aboard the Ark Resort & Spa.

  • What do grooming services include?

Depending on your pet's needs, we can provide one or a combination of the following treatments during a grooming session:

    • Bathing: shampoo & conditioning
    • Nail trimming & grinding
    • Teeth brushing
    • Breed-specific haircuts
    • De-shedding treatments
    • Ear cleaning
    • Brushing & de-matting
    • Full haircuts
  • Why should I have my pet professionally groomed?

Have you been taking on the responsibility and time commitment of grooming your pet yourself? While you may have chosen to do this in the past, there are a few good reasons to bring them to a professional groomer to get the job done:

    They have the right tools.

Professional groomers have a varied selection of grooming tools, from a range of specialty skin products to clippers, bathtubs, and grooming tables designed specifically for pets. They also keep numerous specialty shampoos on hand for dogs and cats with allergies, skin irritations, ticks, and fleas, and even for those unfortunate skunk encounters.

They have plenty of experience handling dogs and cats.

Professional groomers have the training needed to keep your dog or cat safe during grooming. They have experience in handling animals with behavioral issues, seniors, and more.

They take care of the unsavory tasks.

We love our pets - that's a given! But when it's time to clean and groom them, some tasks are far from pleasant. From shampooing dogs that have been sprayed by a skunk or jumped in mud, to cleaning anal glands and removing fleas and ticks, a professional groomer can get the yucky stuff done with less fuss and hassle - so you don't have to.

  • How often should I have my pet groomed?

Depending on your pet's hair length, coat type, and breed, the answer to this question could change. For most pets, regular grooming should be done about once a month.

  • How long does a grooming session take?

How long a grooming session should take will depend on the size of your pet, and his or her coat type and length. It also depends on the types of grooming services they need. That said, most grooming sessions at our hospital take an hour or two.

  • How much does grooming cost?

Depending on your pet's size, breed, and type of coat, the cost per grooming session will vary. Whether your pet has any significant behavioral issues can also impact the cost. To get a better idea of cost, please contact us for an estimate.

  • What are the health benefits of professional grooming?

To ensure your pet stays clean and healthy, grooming should be a regular part of their routine. This task can remove ticks, mats, fleas, and fur that's been shed but stuck to your dog's coat. Other health conditions can also be prevented, halted, or detected.

Mats can lead to knots in your pet's fur, which can cause pain and discomfort - something every pet parent wants to prevent. We can also help your dog's coat shine by giving it a good brushing. We can also trim their nails to prevent germs from invading the nail beds, and curling of the nails.

It's critical for your pet's health that any skin issues or infections are detected early, and the groomer will be trained on which symptoms to look for. They will find any rashes, infections, lesions, inflammations, or new lumps that even the most diligent owner may miss. They may also discover an underlying issue. The sooner these are caught, the sooner they can be treated.

  • How do your groomers handle fearful or aggressive pets?

Our groomers have spent many hours handling anxious, aggravated, or stressed animals. In cases where an animal becomes especially aggressive or fearful, sedation during the grooming process may be recommended. However, most of the time our groomer can manage an animal with the following steps.

    • A quiet, peaceful environment

    • Offering treats

    • Frequent breaks

    • Opening a window or playing music

    • Asking a dog to do something it knows (like 'sit' or 'shake')

Cat & Dog Bathing Services

Our bathing services include a nail trim, ear cleaning, shampooing, and anal gland extraction, in addition to blow-drying and brushing. These services are available daily.

We also use Fresh n' Clean to help your cat or dog smell good for two weeks!
