What to Expect from Pet Surgery

We are committed to ensuring you are fully informed throughout the surgical process - first about why we are recommending a surgical procedure, then regarding any post-operative care your pet will require after they arrive home. We also practice stringent surgical protocols at our clinic. 

Surgical Procedures

At Pekin Veterinary Clinic, our vet surgeons routinely perform these elective and non-elective surgeries:

• Soft Tissue Surgery

  Soft tissue procedures are for pets suffering from ear, nose, and throat disorders. 

  These procedures are also available for skin, hepatic, gastrointestinal, oncological, cardiothoracic, and urogenital disorders. 

• C-Sections

  During Caesarean sections, kittens or puppies are removed from their mother's uterus. 

  Usually, C-sections are performed when the mother is unable to give birth naturally. 

• Ocular

  Is your pet experiencing redness, swelling, or pain in or around their eyes? They may need an ocular surgery. 

  Common ocular procedures for cats and dogs include eyelid tumor removal, ectropion surgery, entropion surgery, cherry eye surgery, exenteration of the orbit, and cataract surgery. 

• Mass Removal

  Masses associated with the skin can develop in cats and dogs. They may also grow inside the body and can be serious or life-threatening. 

  Mass removal surgery is a fairly common procedure for both dogs and cats. 

• Foreign Body

  Sometimes, dogs or cats can ingest foreign objects, which can then get stuck inside the body. 

  Whether your pet has eaten an item they shouldn't have or an accident has left them injured, we can perform foreign body surgery to remove it. 

• Wounds

  If living tissue has been torn, cut, burnt, broken, or otherwise damage, wounds can occur. 

  It's critical that a qualified veterinarian cleans, disinfects, and appropriately cares for these wounds as soon as possible. 

• Cystectomy

  During a cystectomy, a cat's or dog's urinary bladder is removed by our vets. 

• Spaying & Neutering

  When we spay or neuter a dog or cat, they are surgically sterilized to prevent disease. This also gives them an extended life expectancy.  

• Dental Surgery

  Our veterinarians offer dental surgeries for dogs and cats. These surgeries can range from tooth extractions to gum disease treatment and jaw fracture repairs.

The Surgery Process

We understand that it can be frightening to consider bringing your pet in for surgery. Please rest assured that we only recommend surgery when it is in the best interests of your furry friend. 

We will confirm that you fully understand why a certain procedure is being recommended and that you are comfortable making the decision to move forward. 

Surgical protocols at our clinic include:

Pre-surgical assessments. We will review the specifics of the procedure, complete a comprehensive physical exam for your pet, and confirm blood tests have been taken and studied by the vet to determine whether your pet faces any risk of anesthesia-related complications. 

Dedicated surgical suites. Surgeries are performed in our dedicated surgical suite. This area is kept completely sterile to prevent infection and cross-contamination. 

Surgical attire. Each of sour staff wears disposable caps and masks at all times when in the surgical suite. Anyone involved in the procedure itself also wears single-use gloves and sterile gowns. 

Sterile packs and equipment. Our surgical instruments are carefully cleaned, sterilized, and wrapped before every surgical procedure.
