Planning for a Healthy Life

"Thank you for seeing her so often and working to determine what was wrong... And for so gently talking to her at the end and for your sympathy for us. You handle things with grace and kindness."

Your Pets Wellness

Wellness

At Pekin Veterinary Clinic, wellness is our priority. Taking care to prevent illness and enhance good health contributes to the long life of your pet.

Our Wellness Program begins with these fundamentals:

  • All-inclusive physical exam, a check-up from nose to tail including ears, eyes, skin, coat, teeth, heart, lungs, and more
  • Complete blood cell count
  • Comprehensive organ function panel
  • Urinalysis
  • Internal parasite testing

In most cases deworming and heartworm preventatives are begun and continued for the life of your pet. Should diagnostics indicate the need for treatment of any condition or illness, we will discuss with you the various options and give our recommendations.

At the wellness visit, we will initiate a vaccination program appropriate to the age and lifestyle of your pet. See the Vaccination page of our website for a listing of the many vaccines available and their purposes.

If you do not plan to breed your pet, we recommend spaying or neutering to help control the animal population. Every day there are hundreds of unwanted pets euthanized. Spaying will help reduce the risk of uterine and ovarian cancers and uterine infections. In males, neutering reduces the potential for testicular cancer, abscesses, perianal tumors, and enlargement of the prostate gland.

Wellness

Some pets require special food, and all pets benefit from a balanced diet. Our trained staff is available to help you choose the best diet for your pet to keep him or her happy, healthy and active. Using the right diet can provide the best nutrition for your pet and reduce your feeding costs by requiring less food that gives better nutrition. In addition, the right diet helps to control the amount of clean up after your pet extending the life of your best friend.

Illness doesn't always have a physical cause. Our veterinary staff is knowledgeable in animal behavior and can help determine the cause of disorders such as separation anxiety and obsessive behavior. They then develop a treatment regimen for the client.

Wellness includes all aspects of your pet’s health, personality, and lifestyle. Spend some time with us at each wellness visit to discuss any concerns, frustrations, and questions you might have regarding your pet. At Pekin Veterinary Clinic, we are here to serve you.
